Fallowfield Methodist Community Church (FMCC), originally Platt Lane Methodist Church, has been on its present site since it first opened in 1932. Within 2 years of opening, in response to popular demand, the premises had to be extended and additional ancillary buildings to the rear comprising of a cafe, day care and youth facilities, were added. These were well used by the local community, but sadly after 70 years of use, the work needed on them to comply with building and fire regulations was such that the church had to consider refurbishment of the whole premises rather than repair.
The decision was taken to carefully take down the ancillary buildings that were in the worst state of repair, in order to go back to and reinforce the original hexagonal worship hall. A new first floor was inserted, taking care to retain as much as possible of the existing fabric, and the upper part of the hall was completely refurbished as a worship area. Much of the land previously occupied by the ancillary buildings was no longer required, and much needed funds were generated for the refurbishment of the Church from the sale of a section of the land, with planning permission for 4 houses agreed by the Church. A great deal of sensitive restoration work was carried out to the building, including that of an intricate reinforced concrete tracery stained glass window, and repairs to the cupola and brickwork. In all cases every effort was made to remain true to the original architectural features of the building.
The result has been a multi-purpose building, comprising a spacious upstairs worship area with flexible seating, accessed by stairs and a lift, and a small hall and large coffee bar downstairs, all of which are available for use by the local community as well as providing space for the young people’s uniformed organizations that meet during the week.
